Gerson told me that he doesn’t really celebrate his birthday in parties like Filipinos usually do. This is a bit of a surprise for me since I see him as a family person. And Filipino families usually celebrate big when it comes to birthdays. But turns out its just his thing. Well, 2021 did not go usual for him since we have something better in mind just right inside the mini-van!
It was in the cold month of January when Gerson finally gets to celebrate his **th birthday (bear with me, he doesn’t want people to know his age ). And it’s that one-time celebration that I have the chance to make the day special for him.
When we’re still dating, I was surprised to learn that Gerson never likes the idea of birthday parties…well, he enjoys other people’s parties since he gets to eat a lot there…but he’s adamant when it comes to his own celebration. When I asked him why he just said that he didn’t really celebrate it as big as others and just spends it like a regular day.
Well, that’s something I can understand. But for me, personally…even as I grew older by the years…I’ve always loved the idea of celebrating special events through family parties. I’m not a fan of large crowds but when it’s just me and my peeps, then it’s party time!
One reason why I love parties is that there’s this wonderful feeling of being with the people you love and making you feel special even just for a day. Plus, there’s a lot of food and gifts to get. That could be an influence of Filipino culture about family and explains pretty well why an introvert also loves some crowds.
So anyway, I don’t want that feeling to be taken away from Gerson and what’s amazing about it is that Ate Jhona already had a plan for his special day! So yeah…I wasn’t really the one who made it all happen but I’m really happy I get to be part of it. Ate Jhona, by the way, is Gerson’s older sister and she’s super great at everything. She cooked the food, made the preparations and I get to help her in any way I can, which really contributed to the success of the party (as I believed).
It’s also fantastic that Gerson has a lot of good friends that are always there for him, no matter what. They came to the preparations with all things ready and Gerson got 2 cakes too! Plus, they up our game with prettier designs on the minivan which really made the surprise a lot better.
Though I can’t explain every detail of our celebration that night, one thing that really stuck with me is the feeling of happiness, joy, and love from everyone. And Gerson felt the exact same way.
So, what does this experience tell us? Birthdays are better when we celebrate it with the people we love. That’s a fact that I will forever uphold in my life. I’m so happy we get to do that just before tragedy strikes in the next few months this year and hope to do it again and again in the next years. Though, of course, it doesn’t matter if it’s a big party or just you and your loved ones…what matters is that you get to celebrate it with you people you love.
